Job Title: Director of Nursing
- DON, Spring Lake Village
Department: Health Services
Reports To: Administrator
Primary Purpose:
Ensures quality nursing care and services by developing, leading, and
managing an efficient and caring team of licensed nurses, nursing
assistants, and ancillary professionals. Ensures that the quality of
nursing care is in accordance with standards of practice and meets
regulatory requirements at all times.
Job Performance Standards
Essential Functions:
Quality of Care:
- Ensures quality nursing care to all SNF residents.
- Supports the SLV Mission and practices the philosophy, nursing
objectives and standards of the Department of Health Services.
- Exhibits behavior as set forth in the EHF Core Performance
Standards (see attached)
- Establishes and conducts assessment process to screen residents
for admission into the skilled nursing facility; evaluates health
status on an ongoing basis.
- Oversees patient record keeping system and infection control
procedures to track health status and needs;
- Maintains, revises or establishes department procedural manuals
and materials as needed.
- Facilitates Performance Improvement Committee
- Reviews and addresses Resident Satisfaction surveys
- Makes daily rounds to observe residents and ensure that staffing
levels meet residents’ needs; ensures all appropriate and necessary
nursing care is provided;
- Interacts with residents and families/responsible parties and
staff; answers questions, gives directions and support.
- Attends resident care plan meetings.
- Assures compliance with regulations including policy and
procedures, documentation and care practices.
- Promotes and protects the rights of each resident
- Is a mandatory reporter for all suspected abuse situations
- Complies with all HIPAA standards of practice
Human Resource Development:
- Ensures staff satisfaction with recognition, retention and
recruitment programs
- Assures nursing competency and performs staff evaluations as
indicated by SLV policy
- Recruits, orients, and retains adequate levels of staff in
each category.
- Conducts skilled nursing staff meetings as appropriate
- Works collaboratively with the Director of Staff Development
to ensure that the staff is adequately trained to provide
quality care to the residents.
Human Resource Development
- Role models professional behavior and coaches and
mentors staff to develop maximum potential
- Initiates and follows through with procedural
progressive discipline in conjunction with human resources.
- Recognizes nursing best practices and conducts skilled
nursing training as indicated.
Fiscal Management
- Budget development
- Adherence to budget
- Creative problem solving with budget
- Performs administrative planning
- Assures adequate inventory and oversees the ordering
of supplies
- Develops and monitors operative budget for nursing
and manages within the budget.
- Reviews/approves all bills for SNF and justifies any
variation in budget
Communication
- Able to demonstrate ability to communicate
effectively with staff, colleagues and
supervisors
- Active participant in utilization review,
performance improvement programs, infection control,
medical records and central supply services.
- Coordinates with various internal staff and
outside contractors, including accounts payable,
billing services, community services and
environmental services representatives.
- Participates in frequent meetings with staff and
managers of other departments to assure quality and
timely communications
- Directs admissions and discharges; coordinates
with acute hospital, assisted living and independent
living staff
- Represents facility in off-site professional
meetings
- Facilitates team meetings
Safety
- Adherence to Fire Life Safety
codes/regulations
- Participates in Facility Emergency Plan
training and fire drills; and if an emergency or
disaster occurs, immediately assumes the
pre-assigned emergency duties.
- Role models work tasks safely and in
compliance with the facility safety program
- Performs follow up investigations to all
work injuries
Other duties as assigned by SNF Administrator
Required Qualifications:
- Current California RN license
- AA Degree in Nursing plus BS in Health
Sciences
- Current BLS or CPR certification
- Ability to read, speak well and be
understood in the English language
- Satisfactory completion of physical
examination including TB test
- Fingerprint clearance from Department of
Justice
- Computer literacy
Preferred elements:
- Advanced degree in health care
management and/or nursing desired.
- Minimum of 5 years experience
working as health manager
- Long term care, Title 22, OBRA
regulation experience
- Bilingual ability
Exposure Risk:
The Director of Nursing is at high
risk for exposure to blood and body
fluids if actively providing nursing
care to residents. Performance of
administrative duties results in minimum
exposure.
Physical/Sensory Requirements:

- Able to move continually
throughout the facility during the
work day
- Able to cope effectively with
physical and mental performance
elements
- Demonstrate emotional stability
- Able to lift, push, pull up to
35 pounds
- Dexterity to pinch small objects
- Vision adequate to read medical
instruments, medical record
- Hearing adequate to communicate
with peers and residents
