Episcopal Senior Communities (ESC) opened Oak Center Towers, an eleven-story residence for very low-income seniors (62 and older) and disabled residents, in 1974. ESC staffs and operates the residence, comprising one-bedroom apartments and studios and provides 24 hour security. Located in downtown Oakland and surrounded by trees and gardens, Oak Center Towers is a diverse community in which individuals thrive and friendships flourish. A superb staff, including a resident manager, activities director and service coordinator, ensure independence and a full life for all of their residents and help residents connect to resources in the larger community. Residents enjoy the use of a library, a lounge, a TV room, a computer facility and an ever-popular game and poolroom. ESC’s benevolence fund provides program enhancements not available in most low-income senior residences, including a weekly-subsidized “farmers’ market” that provides nutritious food and a weekly social event. Oak Center Towers has a receptionist area, lounges, hobby and craft areas and a laundry room. The lighted grounds and parking areas are easily accessible and the entire project is fenced. To qualify for residency, an applicant’s annual income cannot exceed 50% of the local area median. Preference is given to very low-income applicants.
